I’m really excited to be showing you the reveal of the Airbnb guest bedroom today!

Along with all the pics is my first YouTube video (eek, done is better than perfect). Whilst this video is not highly professional, and I sure need to get used to being in front of the camera, I’d still love you to subscribe if you’re interested in more room reveals and design tips from me in the future.

But enough of that, let’s dive in…

  1. Keep your colour palette consistent.

  • If you’re looking for small guest bedroom ideas then a big one has to be to keep your colour choices cohesive with the whole space (not just this room).

  • Choose a theme that isn’t overpowering. You can create a space that is fun for kids without your colours being overly bold to maintain a sense of calm and spaciousness.

  • For interest always consider the use of texture. In this guest bedroom design I used lots of warm timber and a thick, loop pile rug.

Here I’ve used the navy blue bed with some sage greens and rusty reds, along with blonde timber and black and white art as my colour palette.

2. A calming gallery wall.

  • When designing for a small guest bedroom keep your art work the same, either by using the same frame or colours (here I’ve done both). This allows the colours of the bed and linen to be highlighted in the space.

  • Use affordable frames from Kmart or IKEA that are Perspex. This allows the art to be hung quite low to the bed and still be safe for children.

  • Support small Australian photographers like Love Your Space for beautiful Australian photography that is doable for a guest bedroom on a budget.

  1. Consider function for guests.

  • It's an obvious one, but think through how you would use the space if you were the guest. Write down your list and check that your new guest bedroom includes them all.

  • Think about the important touches like a rug underfoot, reading lights, space on the bedside, wardrobe space, reading material ready to grab, an extra throw, plenty of cushions, privacy, a clock. I’m sure you can think of more!

  • Here’s an example of a small shelf to store magazines and a clock. Both functional, but equally adding texture and beauty to the space.

Include lot of functional pieces in your guest bedroom like this clock and slim line book shelf.

Only one bedside fits in this space, but with a drawer and open shelf there’s plenty of room for two people’s things (plus the floating shelf next to one of the beds).

3. Use affordable retailers.

  • Yes we would all like an unlimited budget, but in reality none of us do. This is often more likely the case if you’re designing a guest bedroom for an Airbnb like I was. Does that mean your space can’t look amazing on a budget? Absolutely not!

  • Here’s some retailers that I used for this guest bedroom makeover that could be a great resource for you: IKEA, Fantastic Furniture, Adairs, Big W, Target, Kmart.

  • Do your research and keep to your overall vision/moodboard to get the best results from affordable retailers like these.

Using more affordable retailers allows you to stretch your budget if things are chosen thoughtfully.

4. Don’t skimp on the details.

  • When decorating a guest bedroom on a budget it can be tempting to purchase your larger items, and then forget the details…don’t do this!

  • Map out your budget to begin with, start to allocate amounts to all the items you need to source and include all the small items that make the space feel finished and cosy (think bedside lamps, beautiful books, small vessels for guest’s jewelry, vases for flowers, art and more art). Don’t spend all your budget on your big ticket items!

  • Don’t shy away from hunting in op shops and the like for those interesting details. The by product of this is that your guest bedroom looks different and unique to you - even better.

Vases, books, magazines, ceramic vessels and a beautiful table lamp all help to create a ‘finished space’ for your guests to enjoy.

5. Remember the wonder of window coverings.

  • I’m a huge advocate for sheers. They are just the thing to cover up less attractive blinds or venetians.

  • Install block out blinds AND decorative curtains/sheers/roman blinds. You need to have the function of privacy and heat block out, along with the beauty of a soft sheer or patterned curtain.

  • Good window coverings will help make your guest bedroom feel finished and decorated well.

The use of sheers in this guest room help disguise the timber venetians and create a soft, flowing feel in the space.

Follow these ideas & you’ll be proud of your guest bedroom!

Whether your looking for guest bedroom ideas for your own home, or an Airbnb I hope these tips will help you to feel confident in making a start.

If you’d like a hand, I have Airbnb room packages specifically for guest bedrooms and you can choose from a basic, mid or high end look to suit your needs. Once I know your budget and wish list this service will provide you with a floorplan, concept board and shopping list of all the individual items for your guest room. You can then go and shop it all, or if this sounds like a hassle I take the ordering and purchasing off your hands.

Either way, I’m here to help and as you can see I quite like a room makeover!! Reach out to me here at Design Release if you’d like to chat about your project bec@designrelease.com.au
