Let’s be honest—starting a home project can feel like a lot.
Whether you're building, renovating, or refreshing a space that’s never quite felt “right,” it’s easy to get stuck in decision overload. That’s exactly where a design consultation comes in.
I typically take on around two consultations a month, and I treat each one like a fresh conversation. No pressure - just the chance to understand you, your home, and how you want to feel in it.
So what actually happens during a design consult? Here's a peek behind the curtain:
1. We talk.
A design consultation is an chance to have a relaxed, purposeful conversation where I get to learn about you, your lifestyle, and what’s important in your project. Maybe you’ve just moved in and can’t figure out the layout. Maybe your home hasn’t been touched since 2004. Maybe you're finally ready to turn “one day” into now.
Whatever your reason, this is where we start pulling the ideas out of your head and into a plan.
2. We walk through your space.
I like to see the space through your eyes. Whether we're meeting on-site or over video, we'll walk through your home together so I can understand how it flows, what’s working, and where things feel stuck.
I'll ask things like:
“What do you use this room for now?”
“What’s frustrating you about it?”
“What would make it feel better to live in, or easier to maintain?”
It’s not just about finishes and furniture—it’s about how your space functions in real life.
3. We get clear on goals, timeline, and budget.
A big part of the consultation is helping you get clear. That means understanding what’s realistic for your budget, your time frame, and what matters most to you. Some clients want to DIY with guidance, others want full-service design. Either way, we’ll talk through what’s possible—and what will bring the biggest impact.
Design consultations typically run for 90 minutes, giving us plenty of time to walk through your space, ask questions, and get clear on your next steps—without feeling rushed.
My aim is that by the end of our time together you feel confident - not overwhelmed.
4. Real-life examples? Absolutely.
What Design Consultations Can Look Like in Real Life:
Every consult is tailored, but here are a few examples of the kind of support I provide—because sometimes it’s easier to see what design guidance can really do.
To-scale cabinetry mock-ups for a busy family deciding between storage options.
This helped them confidently choose a solution that worked with their space, instead of guessing (and regretting it later).
Paint colour selections for an owner-builder needing guidance for both internal and external paint colours.
Having a designer as a sounding board brought clarity to what can often feel like a stressful process.
Art placement plans and styling advice following a fresh declutter and repaint in a lovely Adelaide Hills home. No unnecessary holes in freshly painted walls—just thoughtful, well-placed artworks that where meaningful to the homeowners.
I worked with a client planning a lounge room refresh, helping her gather ideas and build a styling direction that we’ll bring to life later this year.
5. It’s the start of a trusted design relationship.
Designing a home—especially a forever home—is personal. You want to feel heard, understood, and guided. That’s exactly what the consultation is for. It sets the tone for everything that follows.
Here’s some client reviews after having a design consultation with me:
" I was in over my head in a renovation, and confused on how to mesh our modern extension with the heritage part of our home. My time with Bec brought much clarity. Now I can boldly move forward with our renovation knowing I won’t mess things up!” N.H - Strathalbyn
“Bec was wonderful, she gave me so many ideas for our lounge room. I needed a plan that I can work towards over time, and Bec was easily able to do that. I really appreciated the summary notes that she provided by email after the session, and would definitely use Bec again in the future.” A.M - Mount Barker
“I had an in-home consult with Bec and it was so beneficial! She came well prepared and had recommendations for furniture placement, textures, colours, furnishings and more. Her knowledge was really extensive...would highly recommend.” B.H - Mount Barker
