The Client’s wants and needs.

But before I start on the design of this space, let’s look at what was it the client wanted.

My clients were a couple that were building their forever home in Mount Barker and were drawn to a classic, sophisticated design style.

What did this look like specifically for them?

They were drawn to statement glass lighting, light timbers, marble, brass and gold accents throughout the design choices. This wasn’t all, they also wanted some colour sprinkled throughout their interiors - pinks, blues, greens with black accents - but in an understated way.

  1. The Design Direction.

So how did this new build interior design project take shape?

After our initial design consultation together I came away with a good idea of my client’s style, wants and needs for the space. From here I put together my client’s brief which included the following:

  • Space planning of the open plan living are for best furniture sizes and function.

  • New window furnishings throughout the home, with a combination of plantation shutters, fabric roman blinds and motorised full length sheers.

  • Furniture selections for dining and lounge area.

  • Rug recommendations suitable for underneath the dining table and a statement rug for the lounge area.

  • Statement lighting recommendations for the entry space and dining area.

  • Assistance with placement and hanging of exisiting artwork and new art selections for the entry way and open plan living.

With this information I went to work and pulled together the concept design in keeping with my client’s overall design vision which was a classic, sophisticated style with injections of colour.

*I think it’s helpful to add that I initially met my clients on site at their new build at gyprocking stage, which allowed for enough time to lead them through the design process without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. It also allowed time for furniture to be ordered and delivered, and for the window treatments to be measured, manufactured and installed in time for the all important move in date.

2. The Concept Design Phase.

After collating my designs I then presented them for my client’s feedback and review. There is generally some collaboration at this stage, and having some visuals of different options next to pieces that have already been decided upon is helpful.

In this case I presented some different rugs, occasional chairs, barstools and artworks to get feedback on what my client was preferring.

Below is some examples of how placing all the pieces together visually is very helpful for my clients to be able to decide on their preferences.

After receiving feedback from the concept designs, I put together a final concept board to show how the final selections all sit together as a whole.

3. Ordering & Delivery Phase.

From here is the practical phase of ordering each of the pieces and organising delivery for my clients. Each client is different and some may prefer me to comply a shopping list with all the details needed for them to take on this phase themselves, but when building your forever home you often have enough on your plate already!

4. Window Treatment Installation Phase.

Whilst it wasn’t a specific phase as such, the process of ensuring the beautiful window treatments were installed in keeping with the overall vision was an important part of this project.

From the fabric selection, determining the right type of window treatment for each room (e.g. shutters, roman blinds and motorised sheers) and co-ordinating the check measures, manufacture and installation of the finished product, my involvement ensured that this element of the project was something that my clients didn’t feel overwhelmed by.

5. Site Visits.

Whilst every project is different, for this Mount Barker project I had numerous site visits to help the interior design side of the build to run smoothly.

Site meetings with the electrician to determine the correct heights for the chandeliers to be hung, with the art hanger to communicate how we wanted the art works to be hung, with my clients to decide on fabric selections for the sofas and all the window treatments, with the window treatment installers for the all important check measures and installation.

These are just some of the touch points that I as the designer made to help keep the project as stress free and smooth as possible.

4. Styling and Photography.

Because this client was local to me, I had the joy of photographing this project after it was all completed. It is always a favourite part of the project for me when I get to meet with the clients and see the results of our months of collaboration together!

Let’s show you some more of the finished project and the design elements that went into it..

  1. Neutral Base with Layered Colour

This owners of this newly build home in Newenham Estate, Mount Barker envisaged their living spaces as sophisticated and timeless without being boring. We worked together to create a warm colour palette for their foundational pieces with injections of blue, pink and black in the occasional chairs, rugs and coffee table.

2. Luxe Lighting

This Mount Barker couple wanted to elevate their new space with luxe lighting, so we carried this theme throughout the home - from the chandeliers in the entry, special floor and table lamps, to the epitome of all feature lights above the dining table. Keeping the foundational furniture pieces more neutral allowed the lights to take centre stage.

3. Timeless Window Treatments

Custom made window treatments throughout the whole home was an important element to meet the privacy and heat retention needs for my clients, and they also helped to produce a cohesive colour palette throughout all the spaces. Looking at the specific needs for each room, we incorporated a mixture of plantation shutters, fabric roman blinds and motorised sheers with block outs in a sophisticated s-wave style.

4. Metal Accents

The interior design of this Newenham Estate home included a sprinkling of brass and gold accents to bring extra warmth and a mix of materials to the living spaces. From the artworks, cabinetry handles, furniture legs and statement lights, this metallic accent throughout the home helped the spaces to feel cohesive and resolved.
