A brand new laundry project reveal

Interested in the interior design of this Aldgate laundry renovation?

Let me walk you through one of my latest projects and give you all the details…

A once tired garage space is now a beautifully functional laundry and gym for this busy family.

The Client’s wants and needs.

But before I start on the design of this space, let’s look at what was it the client wanted.

With a client that loved darker timbers, mid-century modern styling and a warm feel to counter balance this often cold location - this laundry renovation references all these elements to maintain cohesion through the whole home.

On top of the aesthetics of this laundry; functionally it needed to have hardy flooring, plenty of storage and the existing plumbing position needed to stay to keep costs down.

The Before Photos.

Before we dive in, we should stop to look at some before photos. These really help you appreciate the transformation of the space …

The Design Direction.

So how did this laundry renovation take shape?

After our initial design consultation together I came away with a good idea of my client’s style, wants and needs for the space. From here I helped my client by providing the following:

  • A mood and concept board for the overall space.

  • A flat lay of potential samples & colours for the space.

  • Space planning of the laundry and gym area to ensure that layout and flow considerations all worked for best functionality.

Documentation & Planning phase.

This is where a lot of the heavy lifting of the project takes place. I drew up 2D and 3D drawings for my client to review and approve in this phase, as well as provide these for tradespeople so that we all understand the project clearly.

Here is where quoting for trades such as plumbing, tiling, electrical, concrete polishing and cabinet making takes place. Once these were approved by my client the renovation of the laundry got underway!

Installation Phase.

Here I work with cabinet makers and other trades either of the client’s choosing, or who I have worked with previously and love their quality and professionalism. For this project Gra Joinery did an amazing job at manufacturing and installing the cabinetry for this laundry renovation.

Another important part the installation run phase is putting together a selections schedule. This includes all of the tile, tapware, cabinetry colours, handles, wall paint colour and any other detail involved in the design. A detailed selections schedule saves unnecessary mistakes and time due to everyone working on the project being on the same page.

My role in this construction phase of the renovation is to provide design management to ensure that the design intent of the project is fully realised. This includes site visits and lots of communication with trades on the client’s behalf.

How this design was achieved:

Let’s show you some more of the finished project and the design elements that went into it..

1. Spacious Storage

This family home in Aldgate in the Adelaide hills needed a garage renovation to include a laundry and gym area. Lots of storage was in order for all the things usually stored in this hard working space. We found a lovely balance of ample closed storage to hide things away, which included full height cupboards for things like the broom and vacuum cleaner, along with upper cabinets and even some open shelves to display personalised styling pieces.

2. Walnut Timber Elements

To complement the mid century modern items throughout this Aldgate home a warm walnut timber look shelving was incorporated in the laundry. This element brought a cohesion to other spaces and created a warm, mature feel that complemented the style of the home.

3. Warm Cabinetry Tones

We steered away from white cabinetry and instead embraced a warm grey in the laundry to tie in perfectly with the concrete floors that we had polished as part of this renovation. The result is a warm, layered space that will provide a functional and beautiful space for this family.
