The finished product. A cafe, bakery and providore that oozes with personality.

The End Result.

But before we start, let’s look at the end result shall we. What was it the client wanted?

With a client that wasn’t afraid of colour and making bold design decisions, this Hill’s Kitchen Providore is on the front foot in terms of amazing product and service, and has an aesthetic to match.

The vision for this Adelaide Hills cafe was to create a space that offered an experience to shop local artisan’s wares, grab a coffee or stay for a lazy lunch. It needed to be verstile and zoned in a way that made sense to it’s customers.

How far we’ve come.

Before we dive in, we should stop to look at some before photos. These really help you appreciate the transformation of the space …

The Design Direction, Planning and Documentation.

So how did this vibrant cafe take shape?

Well after our initial design consultation together where I came away with a good idea of my client’s style, wants and needs for the space, I was able to put together:

  • A mood board of the overall space .

  • Specific mood and concept boards for each zone in the cafe itself.

  • Space planning all the distinct zones to ensure that layout, flow and furniture choices all worked for best functionality.

  • Paint specifications for the painter’s to begin transforming the space - inside and out.

After this came the space planning and 3D visualisations so the client could easily understand how the cafe would function and flow before any renovations, sourcing or purchasing began.

Installation Phase.

During this phase I worked with cabinet makers, electricians, painters, wallpaper installers, art installers and other trades of the client’s choosing, or who I have worked with previously and love their quality and professionalism. My role in this phase was to oversee the design direction and ensure that all the elements came together as planned.

After all the renovations had been completed it was time for furniture, art and styling sourcing to begin so this space could truly start coming together. This is where shopping lists were collated so my client could easily make purchases (in the midst of the chaos of a major renovation!).

As art was an integral part of Hill’s Kitchen’s aesthetic, we reviewed lots of art together and previewed digital gallery walls to ensure that the choice of art was spot on for the different spaces within the cafe.

How we looked at different artworks and determined the scale and colour palette that would work best for the space (before any ordering took place which ensures costly mistakes aren’t made).

Even down to the styling items, every design decision was considered within the overall vision for Hill’s Kitchen Providore.

How we achieved this look:

We used a mix of colour, modern lighting and distinct zoning to help guests navigate the cafe and providore areas of the store with ease. The result is an exciting and hip cafe that delivers on amazing product and service - a Hill’s venue that is sure to please.

Let’s show you some more of the finished project and the design elements that went into it..

  1. Deep vibrant colour

Some of the spaces in this heritage building lacked natural light so it was the perfect opportunity to use rich colour to invoke feelings of cocooning and interest in a way a white wall often doesn’t.

2. Feature wall paper as a Focal point

The use of a strongly patterned wall paper at the back of the shop front draws the eye and the feet into the Providore! These colours are used throughout the store to bring cohesion and a strong theme.

3. Art and more art

The client really loved art gallery walls. They had a vision of bringing a more homely feel into the cafe through art, so we created two gallery walls in different locations to help visitors feel instantly welcomed and at home.

Creating banquette seating all along the window adds to the ambience of the eating area. With the help of the vibrant colours and art works on the back wall, the dining area becomes it’s distinct zone - cosy and cocooning.

The walls of deep green provide a wonderful background to the locally sourced products and embraces the lack of natural light this area of the cafe receives. It’s also a perfect contrast to the Muuto ‘Under the Bell’ pendant, which in turn highlights all the merchandise taking centre stage.

This area of the cafe is a place for comfortable conversation and enjoying the ambience of the artwork. It is zoned with it’s own terracotta walls and textured with VJ panelling.

Whilst it’s hard for the photography to do it justice - this neon light by @sketchandetch makes for a great statement as you enter Hill’s Kitchen. We think it sets the mood straight off the bat!

And let’s not forget the power of the first impression. We also overhauled the exterior colour scheme to create a fresh, bold welcoming statement. You won’t miss this beauty driving past at 50 Mawson Road, Meadows!
