Needing advise on choosing a rug? With so much choice out there it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all the options. Whether you’re visiting rug showrooms or scouring online, I hope this short video helps you narrow down your choice with confidence!
Here are my 3 tips in a nutshell…
The front legs of all your major pieces of furniture need to sit on your rug.
So often I find that people buy rugs that are too small. Remember bigger is always better and you want your furniture to feel grounded with a rug that sits properly underneath your pieces.
Your flooring is one of the biggest colour palette contributors to your space.
As your flooring takes up such a large surface area, you need to remember that the colour of your floors are one of the dominant colours in your space. Your choice of rug can either complement this (e.g. if you love the warm undertones of your timber floors choose a rug with complementary warm undertones), or help to trick the eye towards another colour altogether (e.g. if you’re trying to hide your current flooring with your rug, you can make your rug more of a feature to draw the eye towards it). Think about how you feel about your current flooring colour before choosing your new rug.
Reflect on the amount of pattern and colour already in your space.
Often people will look at a new rug option quite separately to all the other items already in their space. It’s quite easy to do this when you’re at a showroom or browsing online! Before you hit the shops, think about if you are wanting more texture and pattern in your space overall. A rug can help bring lots of pattern and bold colour and this works well if you are needing that lift in your space. If you already have lots of pattern and colour in your artwork, cushions and furniture then look for a subtle rug; perhaps in a block colour if your other pieces are full of pattern and bold colour.
I hope these tips have given you some things to consider when buying a new rug. These tips together with choosing a rug with the right material for your space (e.g. wool, viscose, polypropylene etc.) will ensure that you buy smarter when it comes to the perfect floorcovering for you.
